Daily Inspiration: Meet Jacob Holcomb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Holcomb.

Hi Jacob, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I Started my journey in martial arts and contact sports when I was 9 years old Boxing with my brother, he was a little more talented then me and after many rough sparring sessions and a few times getting knocked through the ropes I tried my hand at karate. I always liked the martial arts and the idea of using my legs along with my hands. Through the years I continued my training and studied many different disciplines from karate to kickboxing and even kung fu. I started teaching martial arts under my taekwondo instructor in my mid twenties and found that I not only had a talent for teaching but also found a deep sense of purpose doing it, through the years I have been able to help countless people through the martial arts and have established so many unforgettable moments through my time as an instructor. i’ve had the joy of raising my son in the martial arts and awarding him his Blackbelt, as well as assisting in one of my students getting admitted to West Point academy. I still continue to grow as a practitioner training in Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and plan to continue training and teaching the martial arts for the rest of my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it has not I have had to endure several setbacks, I got stuck at rank for seven years before finally achieving my Blackbelt and have had to overcome injuries, doubts and for many years I would teach people for free as a method of keeping myself sharp when I didn’t have a gym or club that I belonged to.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a martial arts instructor I teach Adults of all ages and children starting as early as four years old, more than simply teaching people how to punch and kick the most important quality I teach is character development which is what I believe is the most important aspect of my profession. As for what I’m most proud of, I am most proud of helping people improve and develop the best possible version of themselves. Martial Arts I believe specifically helps to do that in so many ways, if its self control a student needs I can help with that, if its self confidence, health and fitness, self defense I can help with that. As for what sets me apart from others I cant say for sure, there are many wonderful instructors in the area who do such a great job doing the same thing and I’m proud to call a lot of them my friends. If I can give any answer though I would say SINCERITY when people visit my gym they see that I really genuinely care about their needs and well being and that’s one thing I don’t have to try hard to do, as I always say you cant fake sincerity.

What are your plans for the future?
I’ve recently started to involve my students in competing more which has been really exciting and they have been enjoying the experience as well.
