Daily Inspiration: Meet Jake Stevens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Stevens.

Hi Jake, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It started off with just Alex and Jake. They met each other in 2015 playing on the same adult league hockey team here in Dallas. Then we were introduced to each other as musicians and met up a couple times over the years to hang out and play some music. After Jake lost his job during covid, he asked Alex to start working on music seriously. They started writing as a 2 piece, Alex writing guitars and Jake writing drums, and wrote 2 full length instrumental albums while looking for vocalists. The search lasted about 2 years until we met both Dylan and Mira at the soWhat music festival in Dallas in 2023. Since then, we’ve released our EP “Bloom in Gloom” as a group, have released a couple more singles, and are getting ready to release our first full length album as a group. We have been playing shows since August of 2024.

We are really thankful for the opportunities we’ve been given by others in the music scene that we have met here in Dallas. We were offered an opportunity to play our first show at Manic! by Dan Murray and Peter Novotny, and since then, many doors have opened for us. In March of this year we headlined at Trees in Deep Ellum and at a showcase at SXSW.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part of the experience so far has been finding band members that we really enjoy being around. We have a really good group together now and have already made it through some tough experiences as a group that helped strengthen our bonds. Like every band, we have some difficulty with songwriting and learning how we all express ourselves creatively, but we really like the balance we have struck so far and look forward to our continued growth!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We really like the combination we have as a songwriting group, we come from some pretty different musical backgrounds and we feel like that gives a unique feel to our songs. We are really proud of how far we have progressed since starting as a four person unit. We have taken a great deal of pride in our performances and it has spoken volumes for us. Even though we have not been playing together very long, we have a very high standard for our live performances and it seems like our peers have taken notice. We can’t wait to continue to push our own boundaries and we are all very excited about releasing our first full length album.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For us, success is getting 10% better every time we do something as a group weather its writing a song, recording a video, or playing a show. A true test that we have reached our own definition of success will be when we can pursue music full-time as a group.
