Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamelia Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2018 I traveled to Dallas from New Jersey knowing I would make my dreams happen here, full of passion, ambition, and faith. I wasn’t sure exactly how I would make my dreams come true, or even really what they were yet, but I felt them very deeply. It’s funny thinking back on this now, so much of the work I do individually and collectively asks us to feel it first before we can even visually see it.
In 2019 I created my first herbal product for myself and people within my close networks — and really, the rest is history. We started out as a handmade skincare brand and have since evolved into a holistic wellness ecosystem focusing on sensory connection because along the way I realized the battles we fight on our skin are often correlated to what we haven’t worked out emotionally and psychologically. That realization is what called me toward creating safer, deeper spaces for others. It’s so much more than what’s on the surface. Since 2022 we’ve guided over 2,000 people through curated wellness experiences that help them feel more connected to themselves and in turn to the present moment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road in the slightest. I always say that the entrepreneurship journey is a spiritual journey. You are forced to remove any ounce of disbelief in yourself and your capabilities to bring to life the ideas you carry and then nurture them so they grow fully and fruitfully.
The biggest struggle in this process for me personally has been creating organizational structures for a team to function within effortlessly. It took some years of trial and error to truly understand what the brand needed and then how to train others to work through the systems I created.
What I’ve learned is that we cannot do any of this without a village or a team, and the sooner one realizes this, the better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While on paper I am a trauma-informed holistic wellness practitioner and wellness event director, I believe my mode of wellness is an art. I am known for creating safe, restorative spaces that can be immediately felt as soon as you walk through the door, that is my work. From the lighting to the smells to the music that plays, every detail impacts our clients’ experiences and can either support or hinder their restoration. When my clients work with me they can trust that it will be in an environment intentionally curated to restore.
This is what sets me apart. A sound bath session with me is layered with sensory experience and it’s felt as soon as one steps inside.
I am most known for my Intention Body Butter Workshop, which encapsulates this beautifully. My guests walk into a calming environment where I guide them through a body scan and a mini sound bath. We discuss self-care topics, design a personal affirmation, and then make a body butter from scratch, a practice to take home and continue until their butter is done.
What I am most proud of is the 2,000 people we have guided through curated wellness experiences since 2022. It represents that people keep coming back, that they send their people, and that something in the space is doing what it was designed to do. That is the measure that matters most to me.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice is to go out and support community spaces and events as much as possible. They are so important and can only stay alive with your continued support but within them is a world of connection that could open you up to new experiences, opportunities, and more.
