Daily Inspiration: Meet Janae Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janae Harris

Hi Janae, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve worked hard since I was 15 years old, building my résumé to appeal to other “business owners”. But I have always wanted to have my own business and build generational wealth for my children. I want to leave a legacy for them. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without my mother, Monica, my partner Jonathan, and my sister and brother Payton and Jared’s help and support. I didn’t want to just have any business, I wanted a family business. I didn’t want a business that would be profitable for me but harmful health wise to my customers. I saw a need for healthier food options for the people in my community and that’s when my mother introduced açaí bowls to me and after researching them and having them myself. I just knew that it would be the perfect thing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been challenging being a new business owner. As we know, it takes money to make money so coming up with the capital to fund my business was definitely challenging but things are going great! Sales are 3x better than I ever expected.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make fresh açaí bowls. I am most proud of the fact that all of my ingredients are fresh. I personally see every piece of fruit before it goes onto a bowl to ensure 100% fresh and quality ingredients. I think what also sets me apart from others is the pride I take in making my bowls aesthetically pleasing. I think that shows the love put into them.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am constantly talking to people and thinking of ways to gain more knowledge. The other small business owners in the community have been so supportive and helpful. I have gained so many friends but also so much knowledge. My advice would be to not be shy, people are more willing to be helpful than not. People tend to want to help those trying to help themselves.
