Hi JD, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Finstincts is an outdoor adventure company centered around fly fishing and river trips. The company’s founder JD Roberts is native to the DFW area and began his guide career in Big Sky Montana in 2012. After spending several fishing seasons out west, JD and his wife Sawyer chose to return to North Texas. They purchased a place in Graford Texas near Possum Kingdom Lake where they began to offer western style fly fishing float trips on the Brazos River. Just like any small business start-up, they experienced growing pains and poured all of their blood and sweat into Finstincts. Word of JD’s love for the river, ability to teach people and success putting them on big fish began to spread and in 2017, Finstincts was birthed. They currently operate 5 river boats that can accomodate up to 10 fishermen at a time. They offer lodging at the Finstincts headquarters in Graford. During the winter months they offer overnight float trips wher you camp in wall tents and eat fine Texas cuisine. It is a true Glamping experience and a bucket list trip for any angler.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finstincts founder JD Roberts has always said “it won’t be easy getting where I’m going, but it hasn’t been easy getting anywhere I’ve been” and starting this business has been no exception. The biggest struggle in offering fly fishing trips in North Texas is that the average consumer does not know that this exists. Through continued marketing efforts, word of mouth and a constant presence among DFW sportsman, it seems that people are starting to learn what’s available in their backyard! We are in it for the long haul and have been fortunate to build a very loyal clientele that make it possible for us to do what we love!

We focus on providing first class outdoor experiences whether it be hunting, fly fishing or 3 day glamping excursions on the most remote river in Texas.
We are most proud of our guides. you will not find a finer group of fly fishing coaches and true rivermen anywhere in the world! What sets us apart from our peers is the quality of services we provide. All we can control is how we treat people, the bed they sleep in and the food they eat. Hunting, fishing, and weather are always a gamble so we lean into the things that we can control and strive for excellence in those areas. We also guarantee success on our fly fishing trips. You will learn to fly fish and catch fish the same day or your money back! You will not find that anywhere!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
JD grew up fully immersed in the outdoors and the western way of life. Anytime he wasnt on a horse or in the rodeo arenas, he was on the water or in the woods. His mom and dad gave taught him to love Jesus and love people from a very young age and instilled a work ethic in him that is unmatched. “Water and the fish that live in it have fascinated me from the time I could hold a fishing pole.
