Daily Inspiration: Meet Jen Symes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Symes.

Hi Jen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my professional career as a wedding photographer about 7 years ago although I have always been an artist and photographer and had a desire to create beautiful images. Beginning as a passion for capturing my family’s history through film I took courses in photography at the local college to launch my professional career. As a wedding photographer, I find myself investing in my clients, their family and the beautiful rhythm of the wedding day from early morning details through the late-night sendoff.

My client’s experience is my utmost priority followed closely by timeless and beautiful wedding day imagery.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been several trends in photography that have influenced the industry over the years that I have been photographing weddings. It is always tempting to grab hold of a new style or trend and be like everyone else. I have never given into this and have remained true to my style and aesthetic along the way and my clients notice this in my portfolio.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a wedding photographer with a romantic and timeless eye. I strive for authenticity in my images and approach the wedding day as a narrative in which I tell through moments captured throughout the day. I build trust with my clients which allows for more creativity and willingness to take risks resulting in truly moving photographs. It is my goal to not just provide my clients with beautiful imagery, but to provide them with an incredible experience that is both effortless and natural.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have learned through continuing to photograph weddings during the pandemic that the wedding day is more about the experience than numbers or details of the day. Some of the most memorable wedding days have been spent in an intimate setting with only the closest family and friends present. A lot of times my clients dream of a large wedding with lots of guests and were disappointed when Covid disrupted their plans but at the end of the night expressed how thankful they were for the smaller and more intimate wedding experience. “I wouldn’t have changed a thing!” was a common sentiment when this happened.
