Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Dale Lord.
Hi Jenni Dale , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. My mom told me I used to sing myself to sleep before I even knew how to speak. She put me in piano lessons when I was four years old. I wrote my first song at eight, picked up the guitar at 11, and played the alto saxophone in the marching band until I traded band for choir. I studied music in college, played in a rock band, moved to Austin to pursue music professionally, and kept at it. Even though I live in Lubbock now, I’m still keeping at it. I play, tour, write, and record as much as possible.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about the music business is a smooth road, but it sure makes for inspiration. At first you don’t make enough money to pay bills, so you have to work “day jobs.” If you’re lucky, one day that changes. You hear more noes than yeses. Sometimes it feels like you’re always chasing a dream that will never come true. But one thing I’ve realized along the way is everything is hard. Choose your hard. If making music feeds your soul more than anything else, then you learn how to deal with the blows it gives.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer-songwriter. Sometimes that comes at a cost, especially when people want you to fit into a certain box or genre. As a songwriter, I don’t limit myself to a particular sound. I write what comes out – sometimes that’s country, sometimes it’s blues, sometimes it’s whatever else it turns out to be. I’m currently recording my 8th studio album, A Million Moments, and I think it’s got my best songs yet. Last month, I was lucky enough to take home the 2023 award for the Texas Internet Radio Chart Female Artist of the Year.
I’m not afraid of working hard. In this business, if you want to succeed, you have to work hard. I do my own booking, graphic design, promotions (with the exception of radio promotions), social media, business management, and pretty much everything while still trying to find time to be creative and perform several nights a week. It’s a juggling act, and sometimes I drop the ball. But I’m always striving to be better.
What’s next?
This year my focus is on recording my new album and touring. So far my schedule includes nine states and two countries. Being from Texas and in the Texas Country Music genre, it’s easy to stay in the region. Texas is so big that I could drive somewhere different every day and rarely play the same stage twice. I made the conscious decision to travel across the country as much as possible, and I’m looking forward to seeing new places and taking in new experiences.
