Daily Inspiration: Meet Julian Mensah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Mensah

Hi Julian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Threat FC formerly known as The International Threat FC was started by a group of guys that use to play football (soccer) with each other at UT Dallas/Richland College. We started off as a Sunday league team back in 2009/2008 and eventually years later we decided to jump into semi-professional football here in the city. Just recently, we decided as an organization to pursue incorporating as a nonprofit to serve young adults in our community who are looking to pursue professional football while helping them find higher paying jobs.

We have had great support in the community, our founding sponsor being Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House has been in our corner since we started playing in the Metroplex Premier League (MPL). In addition to playing in the MPL league we have teams competing in the Dallas Soccer Alliance (DSA) league. This fall we will join United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) league, in addition to playing in the MPL and DSA leagues.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With any sports team, there are ups and downs. New players coming in, old players leaving for different teams/rivals. All the nature of the beast and we just have to remind ourselves to keep pushing and stay focused on the long term goal. Help young adults get career mobility either in football or the professional world. We are a club that has been around since 2008. A lot of clubs don’t have that shelf life so we must be doing something right. Now that we are a nonprofit organization we are looking to mobilize and grow our board. We currently have five board members, we anticipate growing to ten. Additionally we want to hire a coach and a marketing intern to help us sustain our vision.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is Julian Mensah and I have a career in the nonprofit space. I currently work for Austin Street Center serving the organization as their Senior Director of Development. I have previously worked for organizations like Big Thought, Year Up, and On the Road Lending. I am passionate about social justice, poverty alleviation, and economic empowerment. I am most proud of the two beautiful kids my wife, Hannah and I have brought into this world. Thierry and Genevieve are our biggest joys.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have been very fortunate to be where I am today. My father immigrated to the US in his mid 20s to bring my mother and I over to the US. Luck or strong will via my father’s pursuit of the American dream. I definitely have had a lot of mentors over the years who have been strong cheerleaders and advisors for my career. I have been fortunate enough to attend some good schools as well that has helped establish a strong network here in Dallas for me.
