Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Mattson.
Hi Julie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been an RN for 30 years. After years of working in the emergency department, I began performing evidence collection on adults and children who were victims of sexual assault. I worked closely with the police and frequently testified in court, helping put the criminals in jail for life. Forensics became a passion, and I continued to learn more, becoming a Forensic Nurse Death Investigator, which I still do full-time for the Denton County Medical Examiner’s Office. I also started a true crime podcast, called Pushing Up Lilies, about 4 years ago. Nine years ago, I decided that I needed a “happy” job to offset the sad that I was exposed to daily. At that time, I opened The Filling Station, which is a Med Spa in Denton, Texas. My business success was initiated by all of my nurse, police, and attorney friends who know and trust me. I have never had to pay for advertising. The business continues to be successful and is growing rapidly. I love giving people confidence and helping them to feel better about themselves!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Med Spa business requires a lot of overhead. I started on my own and remain on my own with no debt, which I love. The road has been mostly smooth, but overhead expenses are sometimes a struggle. I refuse to give in to buying cheap products to improve my ROI! I want to give my clients the best products possible.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I feel like I was a little outgoing and shy at the same time. I have a group of “Forever Friends” that I have known since second grade and still travel with. They are my tribe! I am so blessed to have them in my life. I was in drill team in high school and served as editor of the yearbook my senior year. I loved school, mainly because I could see my friends every day! I had the most amazing teachers!
