Today we’d like to introduce you to KAI BENNETT.
Hi KAI, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began as a single mother of five, rebuilding my life after leaving an abusive marriage and experiencing homelessness. Despite those challenges, I refused to give up.
On October 26, I will celebrate seven years in business. I started my tax company by preparing returns for family and friends, and today I proudly serve more than 300 clients. I have also expanded into a tax software service bureau, helping other tax professionals launch and grow their own businesses. Now, as an AI consultant, I help entrepreneurs integrate AI into their operations so they can work smarter, scale faster, and build sustainable businesses.
My story is proof that your circumstances do not determine your future—your faith, resilience, and determination do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. There were many times when I wanted to give up because I did not have clear direction. I had to learn when to hire, what my team should look like, and how to understand the gains, losses, and fluctuations in income that come with growing a business.
The biggest lesson has been learning to trust the process. Entrepreneurship requires patience, consistency, and stepping out on faith—even when you cannot see the entire plan.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own a tax preparation company, operate a tax software service bureau, and lead KB Tax Academy. Through the academy, I help people transition from working a traditional 9-to-5 job to becoming knowledgeable tax professionals. I teach the differences between being a tax preparer, an ERO, and a service bureau owner.
What sets me apart is that I tell the truth about the tax industry. People often see tax professionals working four months and earning great money, but they are not always shown the full business model or the additional revenue opportunities. My job is to prepare people properly so they do not enter the industry blindly.
I am most proud that my children work alongside me as W-2 employees. Building a business that supports my family and creates a legacy for my children is one of my greatest accomplishments.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice is to always keep learning—whether you learn a new skill every week or every month. You also need to identify your target and understand why you are starting your business. Is your goal financial freedom, longevity, or making an impact?
I wish I had understood earlier that success is not only monetary. It is also about having the right people around you, building a solid foundation, and creating a clear action plan.
Most importantly, you do not start a business just for yourself. You start a business because people need help with something. Figure out what that need is, how you can solve it, and build from there.
