Daily Inspiration: Meet Karmin Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karmin Lane.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a proud graduate of Duncanville High School and then went off to college at Texas A& M University-Commerce to major in Radio/TV. Little did I know that a job at the campus daycare would lead me to change my career path to education. After changing my major, I graduated in 4 1/2 years. I went straight into the classroom and began my teaching career. I got my Master’s degree six years later while teaching and starting a family. In the midst of teaching, my heart yearned to lead and after having my 3rd child, I stayed home and soon after got the opportunity to go into administration. I’ve been leading since then in my career and household.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My path has been everything but smooth. Being a mother to four kids, a wife and trying to further your career in education is a juggling act that takes lots of intentionalities. I have to constantly plan and balance my time in order to be great in all areas. I find being organized, having a strict schedule and practicing self-care help me be the best person I can for everyone else. I’m constantly reading and learning in order to grow. My days begin at 4:45 am with a workout and end with making dinner at home and listening to my children read at night before tucking them in bed. I normally read educational journals or catch up on emails at night before I drift off around 10 pm. Balance is key.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am your favorite AP (assistant principal) and I specialize in relationship building with students as well as adults and managing the day to day responsibilities of a school campus. I’d say that I am known for creating a positive culture on a campus. I have been in leadership at two separate places and in both, I bring phenomenal ideas on how to boost campus morale and culturally responsive teaching. Even before COVID (which brought about a whole new level of stress) I believed that when teachers are happy where they work, they are better for the students. My goal is to show them they are appreciated through tokens of appreciation throughout the year and to genuinely know and support them. I’m most proud of the “outside of the box” ideas I have and how well I work with a team to accomplish them. Anyone who has worked with me knows that I’m set apart from others because of the relationship I build with them. I know so many people and keep up with them.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One book that I constantly go back to is Move Your Bus by Ron Clark. It helps me to focus on how I can accelerate in my professional and personal life. I also enjoy the motivation of the Rachel Hollis podcast. I aspire to be an inspirational and transformational leader through continuous growth and discipline. You will see me on a stage soon discussing how to influence educators on molding our future generations.
