Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine and Karina Gonzalez.
Hi Katherine and Karina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We, Karina and Katherine Gonzalez are twin sisters born and raised in Dallas, TX. We’re first-generation Americans and grew up traveling Latin America, where our parents are from. Growing up, we were great students but had a lot of personal issues due to only being raised by one parent the majority of our lives. Nonetheless, we pushed through, graduated, and became as independent as possible. After graduating from Little Elm high school, we went on to study at Blinn college for a few years before dropping out to go work as a bartender and cocktail waitresses. The service industry paid well, but after a while, we were ready to make a career change which led us into various sales jobs and businesses. Starting our entrepreneurship journey led us to get our real estate license. We started off doing residential leases and apartment locating, but quickly found that sector of real estate didn’t quite align with our personalities. Now a part of Onyx Legacy Group, a commercial real estate firm, we are excelling in their competitive field as minority twin sisters in a male-dominated industry. One of our passions in life is empowering women, of all walks of life, to elevate themselves personally and professionally by helping connect them with necessary resources. We are also involved in giving back to under-represented communities in Dallas through different charities and initiatives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things haven’t always been the smoothest throughout our lives. We grew up with a single father since our mom had immigration issues and couldn’t legally be in the country. Our father was always working and we didn’t have many people to rely on besides one another. We oftentimes found ourselves having to grow up faster than others around us. By the time we were seniors in high school, we were already working multiple jobs and having to provide for ourselves entirely. Although times were tough, it taught us many life lessons that shape us into the women we are today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are known as “The Real Estate Twins” on all social media platforms. We work as Land Specialists at Onyx Legacy Group and operate all throughout the DFW area. Our specialization is in all things having to do with land and real estate developments. One thing that makes us unique is that not only are we sisters, but we are business partners as well. Because we work as a team, we can ensure our clients have all hands on deck representing them in every real estate transaction. We are extremely proud to be excelling in a field where all odds are against us as minority women and college dropouts.
How do you define success?
As first-generation Americans, we view success as leaving a legacy for our future families, while taking care of our existing one. Most of our family is overseas so being able to have them all here in the United States would be a dream. As well as taking care of our family, we would love to reach a point in our life where we can give back to our communities on a large scale and inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and business owners.
