Daily Inspiration: Meet Keshia Brown-Northern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshia Brown-Northern

Hi Keshia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Keshia’s Room started because of my passion and love of doing hair right in my bedroom as a young girl. My mother, Anita Brown-Washington was my inspiration and motivator in developing my talent because she herself was a cosmetologist. Today, I’ve come a long way in transforming Keshia’s room into a hair salon. It started with a vision to create a space where clients could feel comfortable and pampered, right in the heart of my salon. I meticulously planned the layout, ensuring that every detail, from the lighting to the seating, would enhance the client experience. I invested time and resources into gathering the right tools and products, creating a professional atmosphere that still feels personal and welcoming. Through hard work, determination, and a passion for my craft, I’ve turned that vision into reality, and Keshia’s room is now a thriving salon where my skills can truly shine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is a journey filled with challenges that test your resilience, creativity, and determination. One of the biggest hurdles is navigating uncertainty, as you’re often venturing into uncharted territory without a clear roadmap. Financial instability can also be a significant challenge, especially in the early stages, when investments are high and returns may be slow to materialize. Balancing the many roles you need to play—leader, marketer, accountant, and sometimes even technician—can be overwhelming, leaving little time for personal life. Additionally, the pressure to innovate constantly and stay ahead of competitors can be intense. However, these challenges also present opportunities for growth, learning, and ultimately, the satisfaction of building something meaningful from the ground up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a cosmetologist who specializes in natural hair and hair cutting for women. What set Keshia’s Room apart is the atmosphere. Keshia’s Room is a safe place where my clients can come and relax without a care in the world. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m able to help women gain back their confidence just from a single hair style.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
That no matter the season or pandemic, women will still want to get their hair done lol. It also taught me how to negative through uncontrollable situations.
