Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Winston. Them and their team share their story with us below:
A native of Dallas, TX and a graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station, Kevin Winston is the Owner and CEO of Kendall Karsen’s Upscale Soulfood. Kevin has held numerous leadership positions in several large companies. He credits his work ethics to that of his parents. As a child growing up, it was often that he was told by his mom, “Always finish what you started even if the outcome isn’t what you thought it would be! It will build character and take you far in life.” It is those principles that he has lived by. Although he has held jobs in many facids, the food/restaurant industry was not one. However, one thing that he knew was that he loved to cook and it was “Happy” go-to outlet for him. He often dreamed of one day opening a restaurant, and he did just that! A restaurant that outgrew the #1 location within the first three months of opening. He credits his success to GOD first and foremost, Patrons and the community. The restaurant is named Kendall Karsen’s, after his sons Kendall and Karsen. Kevin oftentimes is ask what is most rewarding about his success of the restaurant and his reply is “Not only am I building a legacy to pass down to my family, but I am able to showcase my food I prepare from scratch, my values, concerns, willingness to help and an overall appreciation for each of my Patrons! Without each and every one of them, this would not be possible! Kendall Karsen’s Upscale Soulfood #2 is set to open in the next couple of months if not sooner!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, I would say I have kept tunnel vision throughout the entire process thus far, which has helped me stay focus despite running into obstacles such as Covid-19. We as a world experience the difficulties that this pandemic has generated which were no different when it came to the restaurant industry. Food and labor shortages were a big struggle for me in the last 2 years. However, I refused to let my patrons down, even if it meant me straying from the everyday menu. I was terrified when Covid-19 hit, as I was a new business only being opened about 7 months. Despite all the obstacles, I have sustained and kept my business opened without any of the aids such as PPP or EDIL payments which I am very thankful again to GOD and my Patrons.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With studies ranging from Philosophy/Mathematics, Business/Corporate Finance, and Health Administration, Kevin has held numerous positions ranging from some of the largest corporations i.e. IBM, General Motors, Santander/Chrysler to name a few. But, the one, only not as large as those yet, is his own company Kendall Karsen’s. I strive to provide my customers with fresh food that is not only cooked to order but is also cooked with healthier alternatives.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes indeed! Always prepare for not only the future but for unforeseen crisis as well such as Covid-19. How so might you ask, and my reply would be via monetary preparations. I think we as a world would agree.
