Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinda Turner.
Hi Kinda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I have always loved fashion and love to see when a whole look comes together. I learned at an early age that image plays a big part in how people approach you. People notice details and can tell when time and effort have been put into what one has on.
Growing up, my parents wouldn’t allow me to leave the house without being presentable to the public. Even if my outfit wasn’t new, adding a few accessories can make it look like a million bucks! I carried this thought process with me and applied it throughout college and within my corporate career. After years of working my way up the corporate ladder, I found that I wanted to help others look the part, and that’s where my fashion journey began.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I found the courage to follow my love of fashion, I didn’t know where to start. It was hard trying to find my way. So, I started by styling male and female models at local fashion shows. Then, I became a fashion assistant – running errands, cold calling designers, sourcing talent, etc. Long hours and hard work. After a few years of working behind the scenes, I learned so much by working side-by-side with experts in the industry. I found that styling men was where my passion was as it was on my mind daily. Therefore, I took a chance and founded K. Makini Image Consulting in February 2017.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an image consultant, I provide one-of-a-kind solutions for high-achieving professionals. I’m known for putting together clean, crisp, cost-effective looks that my clients will enjoy wearing.
I work together with my clients, so it’s a collaborative effort. They like being a part of the process! I am always proud when a whole look comes together and seeing a smile on my client’s faces. It’s definitely a Christmas morning feeling!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I give credit to my parents for instilling a solid foundation for me as a child. My love for fashion started with watching my parents getting ready for work, church, and other events. They took time to include small details that made a big difference. I was always taught that people make time for what they want, so cutting corners was not an option.
I also credit all the doors that were shut and the multiple no’s I received along the way. It made me work harder and develop tough skin. I found that through those downfalls, I was getting closer to a yes.
