Today we’d like to introduce you to Kit Lively.
Hi Kit, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Both MAD and National Lampoon got their greasy hooks into me at an early age. I was obsessed and suddenly had purpose at the age of 9 (not recommended). I began making my own humor magazines and then contributing to other humor magazines. After years of struggle in the comedy trenches, I began contributing to both MAD and National Lampoon, and now am managing editor of the acclaimed humor website, Weekly Humorist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s a smooth road only in that you’re doing what you love, and being compensated for same. Still, plenty of struggles of course. Probably the biggest is that comedy writing is such a competitive business. That, plus forgetting to brush your teeth unless your wife reminds you, but that might just be me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If I’m known for anything, other than being the guy who accidentally forgot to wear pants while picking up a couple of pizzas from Cici’s, it’s probably as a writer for MAD. That’s one of my proudest accomplishments, as it’s not easy to get in, and even less so to become a regular contributor. Otherwise, I’m most known for Weekly Humorist, if for no other reason than I’m constantly writing the website address on restroom walls.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that risk-taking can be rewarding when working in a creative medium. It can help you get noticed in a field that can be very crowded. When I first began contributing to professional humor magazines, I was told that my stuff was risky, but it wasn’t something that I was going for necessarily. I was just writing what I thought was funny. Sometimes it got through, sometimes it didn’t.
