Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylah Henry.
Hi Kylah, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Team Athena was launched in January 2019 under the direction of creator Evan Miller, Darius Brown, Edward Refuerzo Jr., and Tamara Valle. The team debuted its first set at World of Dance Dallas that same year. In fall of 2019, the team transitioned to new leadership under the direction of its current leaders, Darius Brown and Kylah Henry.
Looking to take the team in a new direction, the two led the group of 15 to compete at World of Dance Houston that same year. In 2022, the team is now in its 6thseason, having catered to a large variety of female dancers while training, competing, and performing throughout Texas. In addition to these activities, the team continues to produce their own concept videos, photoshoots and host community workshops and events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Despite its shift in leadership, Team Athena was developed with the sole intention of creating an inclusive environment for female dancers in Dallas to train and compete. In our 6th season of operation, these values still hold true. We look to create a lifelong bond of sisterhood through dance while encouraging our dancers in both their freestyle and choreography ability.
Like many countless organizations, the lockdown as a result of COVID-19 proved a huge challenge for Team Athena, and deciding when and how to start operating again was a huge challenge. Our primary studio closed as a result of the pandemic, and we’ve had to relocate the group several times around DFW.
As we take on new challenges, like travelling out of town to compete, hosting our annual Texas-wide Renaissance showcase, or take on local and state performance opportunities, we work to determine the best way to create a seamless experience for our dancers. For our directors, running Team Athena is a constant learning experience.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Our Renaissance showcase is an annual Texas-wide dance show that hosts performers from all over the state and Gilley’s Southside Ballroom.
