Hi Lakeisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey y’all! I’m a 25 year old Dallas Native and makeup artist/ enthusiast.
I started my makeup journey at the age of 16. Growing up, I often felt like the outcast, so this is when I began to experiment with my looks. I started off watching YouTube tutorials and then recreating them on myself. Early 2016 I started Freelancing for M.A.C cosmetics which is where I learned to do makeup on clients. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Merchandise Marketing in late 2016 but I still didn’t know what I wanted to do. I’ve tried everything from being a cashier, buyer, insurance agent, travel agent, modeling, etc. but somehow, I still kept coming back to makeup! So, I took a leap of faith and I decided to launch LLJ Artistry in February 2021. Artistry was established to show the beauty and transformative power of makeup through tutorials, clientele and imagery. The brand was birthed on the 10th year after the first time I picked up a makeup brush and decided to make it my passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No! It hasn’t been a smooth road at all but I have enjoyed this 10 year journey. I was in high school with no job when I first started, so I didn’t have a lot of money to buy makeup and often had to get creative. I got made fun of a lot at the beginning during the struggle phase and I know others can relate to that! Lol. Another huge struggle was my skin! I didn’t realize how important skincare was so I began to develop cystic acne and hyperpigmentation, which further fueled my insecurity. Confidence was another trait I lacked, and it held me back for years; that’s until I decided that I would love and believe in myself and reach my full potential.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Aw, thank you! I specialize in Traditional Glam, Dramatic looks, Cut Creases and makeup Transformations. I’m most proud of the smile I see on a client’s face after I do their makeup. Making people feel beautiful is truly my calling. What sets me apart is my passion for teaching, both in person and through virtual makeup tutorials. I want people to not only learn how to do makeup but to be confident and feel beautiful in the inside as well. I take clients of all ages, genders and races!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Confidence is the most important lesson I have learned! I used to think back to what could have happened if I believed in myself ten years ago when I first began; then I realize that this is a part of my story and the ride isn’t over! In order to truly step into your Purpose, believe in yourself and know that you were created to be something special and that we all have something that makes us unique. No matter how many people do what you do, no one can do it like you so make it count!!
