Today we’d like to introduce you to Latice Williams.
Hi Latice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Born in Louisiana, raised in south Mississippi, sweets have always been part of my life. I can remember when I was about 12 years old. My stepdad (God rest his soul) brought me in the kitchen to show me how to cook. I can remember his exact words. “You’re not going to be cute and can’t cook like your momma.” My first dish I learned to make was Fried pork chops, dirty rice, and corn. I felt we needed something sweet to eat with dinner. My dad then went to the store and got me a box cake and some can icing. I honestly believe that’s where Sweet Tooth was born. I’ve literally just had a desire to make something sweet. In 2011 I decided to take my baking seriously and in 2020 I was chosen to compete on a Food Network show called Great Chocolate Showdown. Where 10 baker compete for the top spot. With God’s grace, I walked away the champion (insert bragging rights).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Only thing smooth about this journey is my buttercream lol. Over the years trying to perfect my craft I’ve ran into every problem imaginable. From bad recipes to cakes falling in transit. Instead of calling them struggles I’ll call them “cake lessons”’
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself as a pastry chef (sometimes). I specialize in all things sweet. What I believes sets me apart is the actual passion and love I have for my desserts. They are all southern recipes with a millennial twist. I’m known for my cakes; however I offer more than that. I make and bottle my own caramel. I have a line of chocolate bars and bonbons. And not to mention I’m the champion of Food network Canada Great Chocolate Showdown (season 2).
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I haven’t had any luck with a mentor, so I’ve started mentoring others. What I’m looking for in a mentor I offer to those that I mentor. The advice I give them are the things I’ve learned over the years that the internet doesn’t tell you.
