Daily Inspiration: Meet Laurice Ivy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurice Ivy.

Laurice, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my personal training journey after graduating high school in 2013. I was always an athlete growing up and played just about every sport. After high school, I took a gap year but still wanted to remain active, so I began going to the gym. After seeing health scares from immediate family members, I knew that fitness would always be a focal point in my life. My older brother asked to come to the gym with me one day and he offered to pay me to workout with him. That’s what the lightbulb turned on. “I can get paid for training people,” and ever since then, I’ve been reading books, taking classes & getting certifications to gain more knowledge on metabolism, biomechanics, kinesiology and so much more!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road of an entrepreneurial personal trainer is a rollercoaster ride (and I hate rollercoasters!) But it’s a ride worth getting on. The main struggle is gathering clientele and selling yourself. These struggles produce moments of self-doubt. If the business doesn’t move fast enough, I often wondered if I was good enough. But the reassurance came when clients reached their goals. Once clients reach their goals, the referrals came pouring in and the business began to scale like I initially planned for. I’ve now trained over 100 people and helped many people get off medications, fit into clothes they never thought they would wear again, and even helped sports-related injuries rehab their way back to the field. Choosing a career that services & pours into others & seeing the positive impact is more fulfilling than any other career I could’ve chosen.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialized in sports performance & strength & conditioning. I still train the weekend warriors, youth athletes and people dealing with chronic pain. Growing up as an athlete, I’m known as the sports guy but I recently transitioned my training practices towards taking a more mental approach. I began an online series called “It’s More Than Physical.” I would train (sometimes workout with) a client and following the workout, I would interview them about their mental health. We’ve heard all the cliché on how fitness is 80% mental. Or how showing up is the hardest part. But why? This content focuses on the “why” before we focus on the end goal. You learn so much about a client that you can not only program their workouts to tailor their why, but also understand why their bad days are bad days. You understand why their habits become their habits. Why is the greatest question a trainer can ask because it puts the client and their goals into perspective. Having an intimate understanding of a client is how I really help, and that fosters into relationships beyond business, but they become like family.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I recently relocated from Chicago to Dallas. I found a new gym home at Greater Than Performance & Rehab. It’s more than a gym but a wellness center for all your fitness and health needs. Their mission is my mission and it’s in the name of the company, Greater Than. Your clients are greater than their chronic pain, their self-doubts, fears of the gym, and uncertainty. We’re partnered with a lot of non-profits like Dallas Wheelchair Tennis Club, Dallas Mavs Jr Wheelchair basketball & Cornerstone Crossroads Academy School. When I was told, “it takes a village…” Finding a home at Greater Than puts it into a deep perspective, and I’m happy I settled into my tribe here. I’d love for anyone dealing with chronic pain, looking to lose weight, train for a sport, or get a massage to come be a part of something bigger than memberships & annual fees! We really provide an amazing experience that you won’t obtain anywhere else.

Pricing:

  • 1 session – $85 for an hour
