Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Henry.
Hi Lexi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a child I longed to be a professional photographer-it was my dream job! Every year I would ask Santa for a new camera for Christmas. I was always behind a camera documenting my friends and family from an early age. One day, I distinctly remember being about 10 years old and asking my late father, “when will I be considered a professional photographer?”. I’ll never forget his response. He told me:
“When someone pays you to take photos of them.”
Of course, this doesn’t always distinguish a pro from an amateur. However, it was from that day forward my mission to get paying clients.
Today, I’m a professional wedding and family photographer and videographer with over 5 years full-time experience. I’m absolutely living my childhood dream.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My father taught me that in order for you to figure out your dream, you need to distinguish three things: Does it have a purpose? Do you enjoy doing it? & Are you good at it?
If there is no purpose and no need for your career, you will have a hard time being successful with no buyers. If you don’t LOVE what you’re doing, you will have an incredibly hard time being successful doing something you hate. And lastly, being good at your job is a key factor. All of these things were driving forces for me to start my career as a full-time photographer and videographer. Without my dad’s help, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I used to be a Sonic carhop, bartender, and waitress… not completely in that order but I was bouncing around job after job looking to make the next paycheck. There is always a purpose for food service workers. Heck, I was a really good server too. But did I enjoy it? For lack of a better work…
HECK no.
I hated working for other people. I felt like I wasn’t utilizing my full potential. The struggle to do more and become more was there, I just didn’t know where to start.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So, how did I start?
Getting your foot in the door with any career takes a little bit of luck and a little-ok a lot of determination to get there. I was fortunate enough to get in contact with a friend’s dad who owned a wedding videography company. Networking… you have to do it!
His company is not currently in business anymore, but working alongside his team and assisting in the wedding industry made me realize there was some money to be made. Connections, I quickly realized, was key.
Once I gained the confidence in my skill to work weddings on my own, I quit my job in the foodservice industry and started my own wedding videography and photography business in 2017. “LR Photo & Videography” was born, which is now ‘Lexi Henry Weddings”.
I’m a fine art photographer and documentary videographer. Every image is artfully created, intentional, and often times photojournalistic. It’s hard to put myself into the category of strictly fine art or photojournalism: I lie somewhere in the middle.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Being a native to Dallas, Texas, my heart will always have a special place for this city. I reside in Frisco, but I love how close-knit of a community DFW is. The toll roads can be hectic and scary, especially on weekend wedding days, but I wouldn’t trade this lifestyle for anything.
