Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Miller. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Luke Miller is the owner of No Switch Fitness, a company that prioritizes taking “No Off Switch in the Pursuit of Results” when it comes to his clientele. No Switch Fitness specializes in both offseason and contests prep for bodybuilders through one-on-one coaching in nutrition, training, and supplementation protocols with two other coaches, Olivia Gravengaard and Alan Murphy, that work with lifestyle clientele. The company also participates in physiology-based education by conducting in-person seminars across the globe that aim to elevate the industry standard at which it holds coaches. Most recently, holding seminars in the United Kingdom in the cities of Manchester and Rotherham. Luke also participates in other facets of the field outside of his personal business including holding a position as an educator for J3 University and a business mentor for Pivotal Conversations (formerly known as Elite Vitality).
Luke’s educational/experience background includes a Master’s of Science in Exercise Science from the University of South Florida, CSCS certification, PSL2 certification, and an engineering degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he found his love for biomechanics during undergrad when he was involved in research aiming to limit concussions from helmet-to-helmet impacts during gameplay. He is also a competitive bodybuilder himself, having competed seven times in the NPC; because of all of this, he takes pride in leading from the front for all of his athletes.
Growing up in Mobile, Alabama, golf was originally his passion to pursue, competing at a relatively high level, until he lost his scholarships to play collegiate golf with a meniscus injury. Having already being plugged into a gym that had a relatively large bodybuilding community for a gym in Mobile, that competitive nature transferred over into bodybuilding. After competing 5 times and being mentored in the coaching process across those years, the birth of No Switch Fitness happened at the end of 2016. Luke’s passion for coaching and educating others flourished from there pursuing his graduate degree to further specialize in the realm of online coaching for bodybuilders and educating other coaches/trainers in the industry.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road the entire way, and most of the time it was around the hours I was working. When I started the business, I was already working full time as an engineer so I would work through the day, train, then spend the nights and weekends working on the business. When I left my job to go to grad school, I was either working as a Strength and Conditioning coach in the athletics department at USF or in the last semester I spent doing helping with research alongside trying to develop the coaching business and going to grad school. During the time I was helping with Strength and conditioning, I would leave the house around 4 am, get to the weight room around 4:45, work until around 2 pm, train until 4, work on the business until class at 5:30 and have class until around 8 pm where I would head home and get back around 8:45-9 pm most nights. Even when I graduated grad school, I had to work a job through the day managing Personal Training departments from around 6 am to about 7:30 pm, come home and work on the business at night and through the weekends. This covered the time span of 2017-2020 wherein 2020 I went into pursuing the business full time and it paid off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The majority of my work is helping people get ready for bodybuilding shows and managing their offseason to build muscle. This includes managing all of their training, nutrition, supplementation, and helping with the management of their health marker throughout all of this process as well. In order to do this well, clients will check in with me at least once per week filling out spreadsheet check-in trackers, updating progress photos, and monitoring their progress towards their end goal. Some people will be updating me 2 and 3 times per week as we get closer to a show to make sure all of the variables are being managed well.
From a content production side, we have the No Switch Fitness YouTube page, two podcasts, the No Switch Fitness Podcast and the J3 University podcast, and all of our social media outlets as well.
On the education side of the business, No Switch Fitness puts on in-person seminars to help coaches and trainers with advanced coaching practices for their own businesses. I also teach online as an educator for J3 University which is a self-paced development course for online coaches and trainers, especially in the realm of physique sports. This includes production of lectures, answering questions in the forums, and giving updates on my personal progress for others to learn as well.
I also help with business mentoring through the Pivotal Conversations brand helping other fitness professionals develop their own businesses.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Absolutely risks have to be taken when running a business. Every decision you make in moving your business forward as a brand carries risks and rewards and sometimes for the rewards you need the risks are high. One of the biggest ones for us was selling almost everything we had in Charlotte, NC to move to Dallas with no jobs other than the online coaching business I was running, which was not yet full-time at that time. When we did, that move put me into an environment where I flourished and rapidly grew my brand to what it is today. If my wife and I had not made that move to Dallas I do not know if we would be coaching and educating on the global scale we are today.
When it comes to taking risks, I would consider myself a risk-taker. Even if you fail, you are going to learn something from the decisions that you make that will help guide future decision-making. When it comes to making decisions, they are always made in reference to our core pillars below accompanied with the discussion points we use to convey what we are about.
1. Education (2 here): Educate to Elevate Others.
Where Intensity Meets Intention
2. Mentality: Having No Off Switch in the Pursuit of Results
3. Moving the Industry Forward: Leave the Industry Better than We Found it.
If the decision aligns with these values, then oftentimes it is a good decision for the business.
