Today we’d like to introduce you to Macey Alexander.
Hi Macey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Macey, a wife, mom, former teacher, and wedding photographer. I’m entering that fun phase of life where I finally kind of have things figured out, but still growing every day.
I have always been a fan of photography. I did it more so as a hobby in 2019, but got serious about it in 2021. At that time I was a high school teacher. Photography was the big dream, but I didn’t think I could make it my sole career. The thought of transitioning out of a stable job came with fears and hesitancies. It all shifted for me when I had my son in 2022. I quickly realized I did not want to balance motherhood, teaching, and photography. So, I took a very risky leap and resigned after that school year to be a stay at home mom and full time wedding photographer.
It was a rough first year. Building a business and experiencing significant health issues with my son, but it made our family unit strong and taught me how to press in and work even harder than I thought possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I know that I definitely quit a job before my business was ready to replace that income, so that brought about some struggles. The financial gurus would have disapproved of my timing! But at the time, I knew I couldn’t commit to another full school year, and it didn’t feel fair to students and a school district to pick up and leave whenever I felt “ready.” So I jumped in feet first! I learned so much in that first year, bought courses and took any free form of education I could to help myself succeed. There have been learning curves for sure, but I wouldn’t change the way it played out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Absolutely! So I am primarily a wedding photographer; although, I do enjoy a family or creative couples session. When I hear from past and potential clients, I would say the feedback is mostly about the candid images I capture. I love photographing weddings because they are so emotive. Many wedding photographers say their favorite time of the wedding day is the portraits, but I love the moments where no one is thinking about the woman with the camera. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good portrait, and I think it is such fun when I get to be creative with details and posing. Yet, the photos I am always most proud of are the ones that tell the story, that capture people in the middle of feeling joy.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being a business owner requires discipline and the ability to connect with people. I believe my business succeeds because I am diligent in balancing my work load and I have a heart for my clients. In this industry, people want to know you care about them and can serve them well. Aside from being kind and having good people skills, I think the follow through is equally important. Getting things done in the timeline clients expect, communicating well, making sure my stuff is in order so that I can be the best for my clients is such a key factor in success.
