Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcom Wilkinson.
Hi Malcom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Wyoming, but my folks moved us down to Dallas, Texas for greener pastures. I went the typical route of going to local area schools to get my diploma and then off to college to pursue a degree in business. Throughout the years though I dabbled in the arts. This ranged from drawing doodles on paper as a kid, creating a 4ft tall arch using recycled cans in my teens, then to more mixed media now. I think the reason I’ve gravitated towards the arts is that there’s something enjoyable to me about creating something from nothing. That being that the piece of media didn’t exist until someone had it in their mind and sought the tools to show the world a piece of themselves and their imagination.
For me, I like the process from start to finish as there are little pieces of me in the things I make. It feels real in that I can express myself without the voice or the ink on paper. Also, it’s just fun and lighthearted for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d honestly say it has been fairly smooth. The biggest hurdle for me was nowhere as grand or inspirational as some stories may be. For a long while, I was apprehensive about showing what I made, especially since I was in it. It was a conflict of not letting the world know I made something vs the side that wanted to put it out there like a vendor with their goods.
The way I overcame it was simple. There are others in the world who have no shame in their chosen craft and will happily present their work without a care in the world. I admire that strength because they’re are not afraid to be themselves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I dabble in a lot of different creative fields. While in College I took part in some acting and modeling gigs. I was even in a few commercials. Currently, I work with mixed media graphics which deal with computer-generated images. More often than not those deal with abstract video designs, now this can range from an ocean simulation with a rubber duck floating on the waves to something more colorful like neon rain. For me, though I’d like to think what makes me a unique experience for someone would be how eclectic my work is in general. I love experimenting with new designs and media forms.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The easiest way for people to reach me is through my Instagram account. I’m usually on their admiring other artist’s pieces. I love the collaboration process because it exposes me to different styles or genres, I wasn’t aware of before.
