Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Ruiz.
Hi Marcus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started out simply going to concerts, having fun in the crowd and watching my favorite artists perform. Everything changed at an UnoTheActivist show, where seeing photographers and videographers working up close sparked something in me, it made me realize I could turn my passion for music and visuals into a career. Once I fully locked in, I saved up for my first camera and began shooting small shows, learning as I went and steadily improving my craft. Building my portfolio opened doors I once only imagined, leading to opportunities to apply for press passes and cover tours for artists like OsamaSon, Lil Tecca, Nine Vicious, Glokk40spaz, and many more. What started as a love for live music has grown into a creative journey I’m continuing to push forward every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning everything from scratch, especially understanding camera settings in fast paced, low light concert environments. Along with limited resources and few connections early on, I had to teach myself how to adapt quickly, balance costs, and stand out in a competitive creative space. There were plenty of trial and error moments and setbacks, but each experience helped sharpen my skills and build confidence. Those early struggles pushed me to stay consistent, patient, and committed to growing as a photographer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is mainly focused on live music photography, especially capturing the energy and real moments that happen on stage. I try to tell a story with my photos by catching artists at the right time whether it’s a crazy performance moment or something more raw and emotional. What sets me apart is my style: I’m big on timing and I love playing with colors and lighting to make my shots stand out. I want my photos to feel alive and really match the vibe of the show.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important quality to my success is consistency. Showing up to shows, putting in the work even when no one’s watching, and constantly trying to get better has been everything for me. Staying patient, trusting my vision, and continuing to push myself creatively even through setbacks has helped me grow and open new doors over time.
