Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kimberlin. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Madaline started in 2014 with four member playing fun, nostalgic ska-punk music. Since then, we have released 5 EPs and 2 LPs and are currently writing our third full-length, self-titled album. We have been as few as four members and as many at eight, but we are currently sitting with a roster of seven. Madaline consists of Mark Kimberlin (Songwriter/Guitarist/Vocalist), Eric Pauda (Lead Guitar/Vocalist), Adaline Cherry (Trumpet/Vocalist), Dan Sullivan (Drums), Jason Cooley (Saxophone), Christopher Casey (Trombone), and Steven Mathis (Bass Guitar). Since our formation, we have seen both coasts more than once through our nation tours and have made friends in many states as well as in international acts that we have supported. A few noteworthy accomplishments would be our participation in the Vans Warped Tour in 2018, we were part of the Texas leg of the tour stopping in Dallas, San Antonio, as well as Houston. We enjoy hosting our annual Ska Festival, Ska By Skawest Texas SKa Festival, every spring. This events hosts local, regional, as well as national/intl touring acts over a two-day span every April or May. We have enjoyed being a part of the resurgence of ska music locally and nationally alike, we only wish to continue our efforts to bring fun music to the community and grow as a band.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t believe that many things in life are smooth, but we have chemistry that works and through the thickest we have prevailed. Some of the struggles tend to be funding tours and records, making long distances work for rehearsals and events, and overcoming band member turnover. During one of our coast-to-coast tours in 2018, we experienced two detrimental breakdowns; our first vehicle made it from TX to NY and back to IL before losing a transmission. After being marooned in Lincoln, IL for about 5 days were able to crowdfund a replacement van and make our way to Salt Lake City only to lose that transmission on our way to Las Vegas. We were stuck for about a week in Scipio, UT. This was probably the most stress that we have had to endure and we are still kicking.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Madaline is a 7-person ska-punk outfit from Denton, TX. We are a high-energy band with songs that range from personal experiences, to socioeconomic and political response, to despair and triumph, to love and disappointment, and even fictional storytelling. We are most known for being a consistent advocate for the liberation of ska music in North Texas as well as supporting bands of all levels in their plight. We are most proud of our growth as a band and all the experiences we have accrued together. What sets us apart is our sound, image, and how we operate, and of course our relentless drive.
