Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Bassett.
Hi Meg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When my husband Jonathan was in his early teens, (living in Vermont) he decided to have a litter of puppies with his golden retriever! It was so much fun, he started getting a couple more Goldens to add to his pack, and had a few more litters of puppies!
We got married in 2019 and moved to Texas. I have ALWAYS loved dogs, and especially goldens! But never had a dog growing up. So this was a dream to me! I started taking breeding more seriously, slowly adding more dogs, and also getting into the world of health testing, to make sure we are providing our golden family with not only the most charming, smart puppies, but also healthy!
We are passionate about taking the best care of our adult Goldens, and also spend so much time raising the puppies to be smart, personable, and sweet! We start training them not to bite, work on some potty training, as well as sitting for treats before they go to their new homes. We also do desensitizing training and put them in as many new and different situations as we can, to prepare them for the big world! We pour so much love and time and energy into raising these little golden bundles.
Jonathan is a Longview Firefighter/Paramedic, so I spend most of my time with the dogs and puppies while he’s gone so much.
We purchased 23 acres of woods in North East Texas and are currently building our homestead! The dogs love having so much space to run and explore. We built a beautiful kennel, which we are currently living in with the puppies and dogs- while we build our house. It’s definitely an adventure, but we love it so much! We have big plans for the future with making this a dream spot for our goldens to live.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The first few years were difficult! I had to learn a lot the hard way. We lost several puppies, and there were a few times those first couple years that our bank account was completely empty because we had spent it all at the vet, dealing with so many issues. At times I almost felt like quitting. But I’m so thankful I didn’t! I learned a lot, and those hard experiences grew me into the passionate, conscientious breeder I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most dog breeders don’t take good care of their dogs. We truly and deeply love our dogs and they are part of our family! Every puppy we raise is also a little part of our family- until we hand it to its forever family who loves it as much as we do! We are passionate about people getting the puppy that’s perfect for them, so we go out of our way to get to know each puppy, as well as personality testing that we do together!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Dog breeding is so much more complicated than most people realize. It’s a lot of work and heart to do it right, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s constant dedication. You don’t really ever get time off. You have to truly love it!
