Daily Inspiration: Meet Merissa De Falcis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Merissa De Falcis.

Hi Merissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for photography started when I was just 12 years old. I got my first digital camera and would have friends model for me and do creative shoots inspired from “America’s Next Top Model”. At 15 I got my first DSLR camera and by 16 I was getting hired to photograph graduating seniors and families in our community. I dreamed of being a full-time photographer one day, so I went to TCU to get my degree in advertising and public relations with a minor in photography. I continued my photo business on the side throughout school. When I graduated, I got a job doing fashion photography and e-commerce for a local company in Dallas. Eventually, my shoots were picking up to the point that I needed to step back from my job and pursue my photography career full-time! I have been doing it full-time since 2020, so almost three years now, and have absolutely loved it! I document love stories for couples, create killer content for bloggers and brands, and capture contagious smiles for seniors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely struggled with making the leap to running my business full-time. It took a lot of courage to leave the safety of a set salary at my old job. I finally decided to quit and run my business just one month before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the U.S. This was very difficult for me, as I’m sure it was for most small businesses during that time. All of the clients I had booked for spring had to cancel their shoots due to the lockdown, so I was left with no income for a few months. However, as soon as the lockdown ended, I was able to catch back up and had a successful rest of the year!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time photographer, and my focus is graduating seniors, couples, intimate or destination weddings, and branding. My style is the perfect mix of light & airy with rich, warm colors. I believe my work is set apart from others because my posing style is canid and authentic, but my editing style is still classic with a hint of artsy. I am most proud of shooting a destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Positano, Italy, as well as building a well-known business in DFW and photographing hundreds of grads each year.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The photography industry is constantly evolving. In the next 10 years, I believe DSLR cameras will become obsolete, and mirrorless will have taken over. I also think with the improvement of photo and video quality on smartphones, photographers will have to find more ways to prove their work as valuable.
