Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Roberts.
Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Doing a podcast has been a dream of mine for some time now. Roots were set when I did a local AM radio show in FL in 2005. I should have started years ago however with some encouragement from family I decided to take a leap of faith in August of this year. Little did I know how much planning and learning it would take to get a professional-looking podcast up and running without being professional. We finally launched in October and to date, we have nine episodes under our belt and have seen a good influx of listeners and very positive feedback.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth no, exhilarating yes! We are not professionals, nor did we have anyone to go to for advice. Thank goodness for my sister-in-law Trish, her background in coding and website development took a lot off my plate as she has run with the social media and website side of this podcast. Me personally to learn all the editing and audio mixing has been a daunting task. The old saying it’s not work when you love what you are doing holds true. We are still a work in progress, but you have to learn to love the process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My podcast “On Air From the Chair” has been a labor of love. We release a new episode every week. The concept of the show is to find the extraordinary in everyone. Regular people have amazing stories that deserve to be heard, from the single mom raising kids to the drug addict who turned their life around. This is an unscripted conversation with these individuals, meaning I have no planned questions and through the evolution of conversation, we uncover their story. The reason I started this podcast is there is too much negativity in the world today, and we need to hear these uplifting and inspiring stories being told in a regular nonformal format. After each episode, the guest can nominate someone to #daretotakethechair if they so choose. I’m most proud of the guests on the show. Being new to this and having such amazing stories to share already, I know will exponentially grow as the show moves on.
I think what sets me apart from others would be my ability to engage with a guest in a humous, sincere way that they feel comfortable to open up and reveal their story in an unedited way.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always been the one who had a joke or didn’t mind taking the attention. I was very involved in sports growing up, earning a basketball scholarship to college. I think that’s where I learned the ability to engage with anyone from a CEO to a line worker in a Fastfood restaurant. Everyone is unique, and I’m interested in each of their stories.
