Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Kornblum.
Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have been a Speech-Language Pathologist for almost 10 years now, and I started Language Lions in 2020 due to a growing need for speech and language therapy services. Previously, I have worked in a variety of different settings including ECI, home health, public schools, and outpatient locations. I have a service-oriented heart and knew that by starting my own therapy practice, I could help children that are in need while doing what I love. I began seeing 2-3 patients a week, and by word-of-mouth, my practice grew to serving hundreds of children in the DFW metroplex.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no, I have always seen challenges as areas to learn and grow. I feel very confident in my knowledge and skill set as an SLP. Honestly, the most challenging part has been learning how to navigate and run a business. I took numerous webinars, seminars, and continuing education classes along the way. My husband, Adam, is amazing and helps me with a good portion of the business side as well. It was a bit worrisome leaving my full-time job with steady income and benefits, but I am so happy that I took that leap of faith!
I also had to learn how to navigate speech therapy during a pandemic, which was also full of challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I absolutely love being a Speech-Language Pathologist and specialize in Pediatrics. My younger brother had a speech impairment when he was younger, and I was able to watch his confidence grow as he worked with an SLP. I have always enjoyed working with children and knew this was my calling after I took an introduction course to Speech Pathology in college. I would say that I am known for building relationships with my patients and their families. Being able to help children communicate more efficiently with their parents and family members makes my heart so happy.
What’s next?
I have BIG plans for the future…I am actively hiring and growing my practice, which is keeping me very busy. I also have 2 little boys that I try to spend every waking moment with when I am not serving my patients. I just adore them so much! In regards to Language Lions, I am hoping to have a physical location in the near future. Currently, Language Lions just provides home health services. I also hope to grow to different areas of the metroplex.
