Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykel Rodriguez.
Hi Mykel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a hyperactive kid, drawing is something that was able to keep me calm and focused. I always found it fun to draw things that were going on in pop culture. There was always something fun and new to reference and be inspired by. I started with drawing characters from Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, and a ton of superheroes. As I practiced and gained more experience, I started working with different mediums. I began painting some of my favorite artists like The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, and Michael Jackson.
I’ve always gravitated towards pop culture for inspiration since it is part of my everyday life and what helps give me that magic to stay inspired.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
School never seemed to be easy for me. I think being a creative and struggling with ADHD made each day difficult. Growing up in Arkansas and craving a big city life gave me the motivation to take the steps and leave my hometown to pursue a career in arts and meet people that share the same interests. Not until I went to College at the Art Institute of Dallas life was a completely different experience, and I can keep spreading that magic of inspiration and positivity.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have always loved drawing popular animated characters, but portraits of musicians, actors, and loved ones tend to be what I’m most known for. I enjoy working in a lot of different mediums, including Acrylic Paint, Graphite Pencil, Colored Pencil, Charcoal, Ink Pens, and currently dabbling in Watercolor as of lately. I also have a degree in Graphic Design and frequently make logos and info graphics for clients as a Freelance Graphic Designer.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There are a few things I’ve learned on my journey.
– Everything happens for a reason.
– Everything you want to accomplish is there for you; just don’t be afraid to take the leap and work for it.
– Only love can conquer hate.
