Daily Inspiration: Meet Myla Deets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myla Deets.

Myla Deets

Hi Myla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My photography journey started in August 2017. I was working a mundane 9-5 office job at an elementary school, then moved to a public hospital. While working at the hospital, I began to feel like I needed a more creative and fulfilling career path. And working at the elementary school, I realized photography could possibly be something I can do. I worked with photographers for picture days, and this is when I saw some areas that could use some improvement with their services. I simply thought, “This is something I can totally do!”. I was immensely thrilled with the idea of running my own small business in photography. With my husband’s full support, I was ready to take on this new project. I worked with our local Small Business Development Centre to make sure I had all the information about starting a small business. In my first year, I provided services to three schools and won a local photography contest. Also worked with some couples, families, and even some newborn babies! Fast-forward to now, my services have shifted a bit. I’m currently working mostly with couples, families, and corporations, then schools. I got burnt out with high-volume photography a couple of years ago – doing more schools than I could handle because I didn’t know how to say “no”. Definitely a learning experience! I still do high-volume photography but have cut them down to a more manageable amount. I’ve tried all sorts of photography to get a feel of which type I would like more and found that portraiture and weddings are where it’s at for me. As an extrovert, I love meeting and getting to know all my clients and being able to tell their stories in photographs. My style has evolved over the years, but at this point, I’m really into lifestyle, vibrant, and authentic vibes. Making sure my clients are at ease, having fun, and showcasing who they really are and their relationships.

I also enjoy a great challenge and not being too comfortable with one thing. So, I’m currently working on providing services in other cities. I recently visited Fort Worth, where I have family, and started there to get my name out on the mainland. It would be ideal to be able to travel and provide my services in some of my favorite cities. It’s a bit intimidating, coming from a small island community, but I’m looking forward to seeing where this new journey will take me!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not; it’s more of a rollercoaster. The hardest part for me has been making it a consistent source of income. It’s difficult to predict how it’ll go each year. Since starting, I went through two huge storms and a global pandemic. This was also while going through some major anxiety! There is so much to learn about this industry, but I love that there’s an abundance of information and resources out there that can help me along the way. I also have a great support team, both in the industry and out. Being in love with photography is what’s keeping me going. I know that staying persistent and focused is what’ll take me where I want to be!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being patient and resilient. As well as perpetually willing to learn and improve. That’s the beauty of photography that I’m passionate about. It doesn’t just end with one good photograph!
