Today we’d like to introduce you to Nailah Jappah
Hi Nailah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I vividly remember singing “ABC, 123” by the Jackson 5 in my mirror around the age of 3. I think that’s when my passion started and I haven’t gone back since. I’ve been in school choir since I was 7 and I started theatre a year prior and later joined our church choir! I continued with theatre throughout high school and was part of our all-treble acapella group, Sting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The need to be perfect or live up to the standards around me are some pretty hard struggles. Imposter syndrome is a big part of my life, as well as anxiety, so it’s hard to put that out of my mind when performing or auditioning for something. I also have been in departments and productions where favoritism and nepotism were prominent, so I never really knew how important my talents were or if I was good enough.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer and actress! I love musical theatre and funk music, and I’m majoring in Jazz Vocal Performance at my college right now. I’m proud of the trials I’ve overcome and where I’ve gotten without a leg up. I think what sets me apart from others is my drive and my heart. I always have room to improve and I always will put people I care about before my art.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My drive and my personality. I feel like being out of touch with reality out of touch with yourself and putting on a facade can damage how you’re perceived by others. Regarding my drive, I think that being able to push yourself a healthy amount to better yourself is integral to being an artist. I pride myself on being a person first and an artist second.
