Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluwatobi Taiwo.
Hi Oluwatobi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Tobi’s journey is a testament to resilience, growth, and the power of self-belief. He began his academic path studying Computer Science in college, but due to financial challenges, he had to withdraw during his second year. Determined to find a new direction, he moved to Lagos, Nigeria, to live with his friend’s grandmother while exploring opportunities to learn a skill and build a career.
While helping his friend’s grandmother sell food on the streets, Oluwatobi encountered representatives from an organization promoting hospitality training. He attended their two-week intensive program, which prepared him for the hospitality industry. Upon completion, he was placed at one of Lagos’ top restaurants as a server. However, his passion and curiosity soon drew him into the kitchen, where he began his culinary journey.
Starting from the basics, he learned from skilled chefs, mastering techniques through hands-on experience. With dedication and hard work, he juggled multiple jobs, saved diligently, and eventually moved to Dubai, where he worked as a line cook in a Syrian restaurant. His talent quickly stood out, and after a few years, he was recruited by an Italian chef who trained him further in Italian cuisine. Under his mentorship, Oluwatobi became a pasta specialist and team leader, refining his craft and leadership skills.
When visa challenges arose, he seized the moment to apply for cruise ship opportunities. He was hired as a Demi Chef de Partie and flew from Dubai to Miami to embark on his first voyage. Despite facing a rough start — literally, with stormy seas on his first night — he embraced the experience, working for six intense yet rewarding months on board.
Afterward, Oluwatobi relocated to Texas, USA, where he completed a professional culinary internship, leveraging his international background and cruise experience. Upon completing his training, he advanced to the role of Junior Sous Chef, a position he proudly holds today.
Reflecting on his journey, Oluwatobi often says:
“If we open our minds, we can become anything. The path may change, but our potential is limitless.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it hasn’t been a smooth road, some of the struggles were being far away from home
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
a Junior Sous Chef, my work revolves around creating exceptional dining experiences through both creativity and precision. I oversee kitchen operations — from menu planning, food preparation, and plating presentation to maintaining high standards of quality, hygiene, and consistency. I also play a key leadership role in guiding junior staff, coordinating with other departments, and ensuring that every dish leaving the kitchen reflects the restaurant’s identity and passion for excellence.
I specialize in modern international cuisine with strong influences from Mediterranean and African flavors. My years of experience across Nigeria, Dubai, and on international cruise ships have given me a diverse culinary perspective, allowing me to blend global techniques with unique local touches.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
What worked well for me was confidence and being open to learning new things
