Daily Inspiration: Meet Passion Kemp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Passion Kemp.

Hi Passion, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began braiding around 15. My stylist sent me one of those “hey boo” messages—she had to cancel. I told my mama, “I’m not going to school without my hair done. I’m going to figure out how to do it myself.” I spent the whole day watching YouTube, learning how to braid to the scalp so I could do my own sew-in, and a few hours later… I got it.

I started with glue-ins and sew-ins before I ever touched braids. My first “client” was my little cousin—a sew-in that took nearly 10 hours. That’s when I realized maybe braiding would be better for me, lol.

I’ll never forget my first real client—a girl from school who lived in my apartments. She wanted medium box braids. I charged $40–$50, went to her place after school, and after two days, I finally finished. 😭 Walking home with that money in my pocket, I felt so proud… even though I swore I’d never do it again.

But I kept practicing on myself and my cousins, and over time my confidence grew. Once I felt I truly perfected my craft, I quit my job and began braiding full-time. I was 7 months pregnant with my third child, but I was ready. I set up right in my dining room and took clients up until the day I went into labor.

I slowed down after giving birth and after losing my grandmother 7 months later , but I never stopped completely. I took a few clients here and there and officially came back to braiding in 2023.

Since then, I’ve learned so much, grown so much, and met so many amazing people. And through it all, I can honestly say—I absolutely love what I do.

I’m grateful to God for this gift, this journey, and for every person who’s supported Braids by PassionK.

I’m just getting started. 💕

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having 3 kids , and learning to balance work and motherhood . But losing my grandmother, grieving her had to have been one of the biggest obstacles of all . I had never loss anyone that close to me. She was my backbone, my favorite person, and a consistent client and it was hard having to learn how to go on without her…

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Braider. I’ve been braiding for about 9 years . I specialize in all things braids! Most known for my precise and neat parting.

I’m proud of my determination, and consistency! My drive and love for what I do sets me apart.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Im grateful for all of my regular clients that STILL book with me! Especially my girls that’s been booking with me since I first went full time. Thanks for trusting me and being patient with me throughout the years 🫶🏽it means the world I wouldn’t be where I am without you all !
