Daily Inspiration: Meet Rebecca Avant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Avant

Hi Rebecca, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have known I wanted to have my own little shop since age 9 or 10. Everything about it appealed to me. Selling things that I make, having a counter to stand behind to wrap gifts, people coming in and out to talk and buy things. All of it!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The beginning was tough because I had no business history to speak of, and that meant no loans to get started. I raked up money the best I could, maxed out credit cards, and started getting really creative. Leased a very small, rough, but charming spot on a great street, and used every leftover can of paint to bring it to life. I even hand painted my own sign. We painted old furniture for displays and used old wood to build tables. I splurged on a counter from an old doll shop.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to make all kinds of things. Especially at holidays! You will find glittered village houses, sparkling seasonal frames and fabulous vintage inspired wreaths. In Spring I make charming little girl bloomers, aprons, and flowered headbands. All year, you can find festive birthday hats and cake banners. Always available are my treasure keepers made from cigar boxes, which can be personalized for special gifts.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Endurance is key. Slow and steady often wins! I’ve watched other stores open way after me and build their social media following so beyond mine that it doesn’t seem possible. I once found that discouraging, but it simply isn’t everything. I’ve learned that what works for me is the balance of being able to actually run my own store, while having time to creatively work throughout each day, making one on one time as I go with my extraordinary clientele.
