Daily Inspiration: Meet Rini K

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rini K.

Hi Rini, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I was 11 years old and decided to trade in my musical theater class for guitar lessons. At the time, I was super interested in songwriting, so I decided I wanted to pick up guitar and begin writing my own music. I immediately fell in love with the craft and spent all my free time writing and eventually learning to produce my own music. This lead me to release my own album at age 15 independently. I then moved from my hometown Cary, North Carolina to Dallas, Texas, where I currently reside due to my dad’s job. I joined TikTok at 16 years old and quickly started growing my fan base on there while exploring my sound. I started collaborating with a producer on SoundBetter and dropped my song “In My Head” at the end of 2021 and spent 2022 working on my first EP with additional producers, which I am now in the middle of rolling out.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The music business is never a smooth road, unfortunately; however, my biggest struggle was definitely my health both physically and mentally. In 2021 I got sick with a chronic illness no doctor could seem to diagnose and therefore treat effectively. Eventually, I discovered I had atrophic urticaria, which is now somewhat under control. Around the same time, during the heat of all of this, I was also experiencing mass hate on the internet, which caused me to deal with severe anxiety and depression. Balancing my personal battles with school and music felt impossible, and yet somehow, I made it through. I was incredibly lucky to have such great support from my parents during this dark time of my life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My songwriting is the heart of everything I do! I especially love to write songs about mental health and other themes that aren’t talked about as much, such as mourning your childhood, growing up online, and even family relationships. I not only write songs for myself now, but I also get to help other artists with their music as well! I feel incredibly honored to be trusted by them so much so that we are able to write really personal songs with difficult themes together.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I know next to nothing about music theory haha! My collaborators and I joke about this a lot because I used to get judged pretty intensely back in middle school in my band extracurricular and performing arts electives for not being able to read music. At the end of the day, though, I am one of the few students coming out of that tiny middle school pursuing a music career, so I guess it all turned out ok.
