Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Wilburn.
Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
When I was young, I was never allowed to sit and watch tv. My mom always told me I needed to be “productive” and that’s what led me to drawing. My dad would print photos of my favorite shows, movies, and basketball players to help me learn. I would draw the same photos over and over until I knew it from memory.
My first love basketball but art is a very close second. While in Junior High my favorite show to watch was Dragonball Z and that’s all I ever wanted draw. By the time I was in High School I advanced my craft into a small business. I created logos and t-shirt designs for school clubs and I would draw pictures for my classmates.
I attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. This allowed me to add Graphic Design to my resume and another part of my business.
I’ve taken all of these things and made it a part of my business today. I’ve adopted a Halo into many of my works and it represents an enlightened understanding of yourself and being able to make it through any situation placed in front of you. I don’t want to be known just as an artist and limit myself on what can do. Every day I work to develop my craft into something bigger by exploring the things I love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship is not an easy road, and I’m currently still working on it becoming my career. I have months that are very profitable and others that are not, so preparation is key. I’ve learned how much work needs to go into the business side of my brand. There will be days that all I want to do is create but I have to remain disciplined to keep the business in order. I’ve had to break old habits of poor planning and I had to plan months in advanced so that I stay organized.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a creative artist, I do not limit myself on what I specialize in, I want to be a well-rounded. Some days I feel like drawing and others I may want to paint or work on clothing designs. I’m known for my digital art but I also do acrylic paintings and pencil/graphite drawings. I also work as a Graphic Designer and create logos and flyers for businesses. Currently, I’m introducing fashion design and home goods to my brand and it will be dropping in the near future. There’s not just one thing that I am proud of because I love everything that I do. When it comes to what sets me apart, I do not like to comparing myself to anyone else. I want my work to speak for itself and I’ll let others decide on what sets me apart.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Planning and prioritizing became even more important. While working with vendors many of their supplies we delayed or on backorder. So, when I made purchases it was never just one or two items, I had to stock up. I also had to plan even more in advance and become more flexible with my current schedule.
