Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Wheeler.
Hi Rodney, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, my whole life I’ve always been around music. My pop made music and had his own independent recording label “Big Wheel Records” when I was young, he produced and worked with a lot of talent including Lil Shine, Young Tay, Lil Boosie, Juvenile, Bun b, and many more. So naturally, I wanted to do music too and follow in his footsteps. I began recording and taking music seriously once I completed college at the end of 2020. Graduating from the University of North Texas was an enormous accomplishment to me because I was the first person to graduate college in my entire family. Not to mention having to deal with COVID-19 and other challenges this has been one of my biggest accomplishments so far in my 23 years of living. I recorded my first EP “The Preseason” in December of 2021 an introduction to my story and experiences I’ve had so far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No not at all! The biggest and toughest challenge or obstacle I’ve had to face so far has been the death of my beautiful mother Denise Wheeler a few days after I released my debut EP. She was my biggest inspiration and losing her has definitely been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with. She was my biggest fan and one of the reasons I even started making music in the first place. Without her here every day I’ve had ups and downs but I try my best to take it one day at a time and continue to make her and rest of my family proud.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
So, for me, I pride myself on being a Jack of all trades. As an entrepreneur, I never wanted to be put into a box or considered a one-trick pony so I worked hard at developing my skills in several different markets and industries. I am an Information Technology Analyst, Recording Artist, Real Estate Agent, Investor, Sports Handicapper, and many more. For me, diversity is important because I want to have a legacy that I can pass down to my family for generations to come and start building a wealth foundation for my loved ones. Being financially literate has always been a passion of mine ever since I was a little kid. In elementary and middle school, I use to make beaded necklaces and sell them at school. As I got a little older, I started selling candy at school as well as working at Dominoes at 15 years old. So, I’ve always had the entrepreneurial spirit for as long as I can remember. I feel like that is what sets me apart from a lot of people. Most people just want to be great and known for being great at one thing but me I always wanted to do a lot of things at a high level and that level of persistence and dedication is what I feel sets me apart from a lot of people.
