Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Abel.
Hi Shane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For years, I wrote songs and played them mainly for myself. In 2013 I started playing in cover bands. Some of them doing a few of my originals. In 2019 I recorded I 10 songs. Most of those are now streaming on music under Shane Abel. I have 42 songs under Shane Abel.
2 1/2 years ago I started my own band Coins Or Bubble Wrap. Recently, we released Truth under that name on the streaming platforms.Truth was recorded, mixed and mastered in my studio.
Truth is also available on CDs and vinyl.
Over the last 2 1/2 years, I’ve put on several shows, at least 15, promoting other bands that played shows with me and sometimes without me playing at all.
I’m a member of Denton Songwriters Association. I’ve written about 20 songs from prompts from that organization. Eight of them are streaming right now online.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a struggle. It’s hard to find decent gigs that pay in Denton. It’s hard sometimes to get the band together for rehearsals. Two members make a living as musicians.
I have eight more songs that I have recorded. Most are not finished. Sometimes I lay down all tracks myself.
I prefer not to do it all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I focus on songwriting. I have written most songs with no intent on making them popular. Some are, but the spark comes from me. Usually a feeling stimulates imagination. I put myself in different shoes or express my own feelings.
I do craft songs in a somewhat traditional verse, chorus and sometime bridge. I try to never use stick chord progressions. I still end up using them. Almost always wit a twist.
I Started playing at 21. 2 months of classical lessons and 18 months of jazz training. Then self taught so to speak. I absorb from all music.
How do you think about luck?
Good luck at finding two band mates at Yellow Dog Art Bar and one at Dusty’s. All at open mics or jams.
Bad luck at trying to record in a timely manner and at finding decent gigs.
The band is planning on playing a lot more cover songs in our sets to become more marketable.
