Daily Inspiration: Meet Shun Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shun Thomas.

Shun, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Shun Thomas, Ph.D. I am a practitioner-scholar in human services, educator, and community leader from Plano, TX. I was an educator for 18 years with Plano ISD and am now an Educational Specialist for Children’s Health Plano. As a community leader, I am known for my ability to connect schools, hospitals, nonprofits, and families to solve problems. I hold a Ph.D. in Human Services with certifications in restorative practices and youth mental health first aid.

I have held a key leadership role for the Art Centre of Plano as its board president. I am currently the 49th president of the Junior League of Collin County. I am also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Leadership Plano’s Class of 39.

I have been honored as one of Plano’s “50 Leading Women” and Collin County’s “40 Over 40.” My service also includes appointments to the Texas Health Plano Philanthropy Cabinet and past appointments to the city of Plano’s Community Relations Commission, Children’s Health Foundation Advisory Council, Trusted World Executive Leadership Committee, and the SKI Plano committee silent auction chair. I am nearing the end of my term as president of the Junior League of Collin County, and I know that I want to give back to my community in another capacity. That is why I decided to run for Plano City Council Place 7 in its special election on January 31st.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t see my desire to give back or my journey as a challenge or an obligation. It brings me joy. Serving as a community leader fills my cup because it allows me to foster collaboration between groups of people, listen, support, and help open doors that make life better. Knowing that I have helped, or am helping, someone along the way is what gives this work meaning and keeps my heart committed to our community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am someone who has spent a significant amount of time volunteering in the community in several capacities, as noted previously. In my mind, volunteering has always been about giving back in meaningful ways and contributing to the growth and well-being of one’s surroundings. My parents set the example and instilled in me the importance of serving others when I was a child. Through service, I have been able to listen to, learn from, and work alongside people who care deeply about where we live, and that has been incredibly fulfilling.

I never set out to become a community leader through my work. Over time, however, my commitment to service and collaboration naturally grew into opportunities to lead. I understand that leadership is rooted in trust, service, and values. I do not take that responsibility lightly. Serving my community continues to fill my heart and strengthen my resolve to help build a stronger, more connected future for us all here in Plano as well as Collin County.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
My heart for service is rooted in supporting people and agencies in the work they are already doing, rather than asking others to support me. It fills my cup to walk alongside others, offer help where it’s needed, and work together to strengthen our community. I believe collaboration is most powerful when it elevates others and creates space for shared growth and impact.
