Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarita Jaganathan
Tarita, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, I had always been interested in art. My parents used to tell me that when I was a child, I’d always be drawing on the walls of our apartment. For a while, I went through a “formal” education, guided by quite a few mentors. Finally – in my sophomore year – I opened Artistic Junction, a non profit gallery. In fact, we had our first art show this summer, and hope to have another in December to run a gift campaign for veterans and active military members.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the major obstacles I’ve faced has surprisingly been to finish a piece I’m working on. I’ve now learned that this is a fairly common issue, but I still deal with a sense of imposter syndrome, which tends to seep in to how I view a piece I’ve finished. It’s still a learning pathway, but now I have an easier time accepting the work I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a visual artist, I specialize in drawings and paintings. For the most part, my main mediums are graphite and acrylic, since I’ve had the most experience working with those. I am very proud of my graphite work, especially my portraiture in pencil. Being able to draw people and figures isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but it has been really validating to see an upward trend in the quality of my work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely played a role in helping my art gallery grow. For the first ever show I did, it was a fundraiser for an education initiative, and I had the opportunity of meeting a rather important figure in the Frisco ISD Board of Education. After meeting him, I’ve also had the opportunity to present one of my pieces at a non-profit concert. The funds from the concert were used to give scholarships for students, which I personally loved since community outreach is one of the key cornerstones of my art gallery, Artistic Junction.
