Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gensler.
Hi Taylor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I didn’t start my business because I had a plan. I started it because I had no other choice.
At 21 years old, my life completely unraveled. My one-year-old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and we spent nearly a month in the ICU. In that time, I lost everything—my job, his childcare, and any sense of stability we had. There was no safety net. No backup plan. Just me, a medically fragile child, and a future that felt terrifyingly uncertain.
I tried to rebuild the “normal” way. I worked in the medical field. I tried legal assisting. But nothing accounted for the reality I was living in; being up all night checking blood sugars, managing life-or-death decisions, and then expected to function like everything was fine the next day. I was running on empty. For years, it was pure survival mode. Fight or flight became my baseline, until eventually… my body just couldn’t do it anymore.
What I needed didn’t exist. A job that understood. A life that allowed me to be both a present mother and financially stable. So I had to create it.
I remember telling my best friend, “I just want to help people and be there for my son. I don’t want to depend on anyone else to survive.” She told me how overwhelmed she was—working 50+ hours a week as a single mom, barely keeping up with her home. Our sons were five days apart. She needed help.
That’s when everything changed.
She hired me for my first deep clean. I charged $500, and I earned every single dollar. It was one of the toughest homes I’ve ever done to this day, but when I finished, something shifted in me. I didn’t just clean a house. I gave a mother and her child a peaceful place to rest. I created relief where there had been stress. And for the first time in a long time, I felt fulfilled.
That moment built the foundation for everything.
What started out of desperation became purpose. What felt like the darkest chapter of my life became the reason I found my strength. Through every hardship, every sleepless night, every moment I thought I wouldn’t make it, I was being shaped into who I am today.
Now, at 30 Years old and the owner/operator of Southern Maid Cleaning Co., I don’t just run a business. I serve people who are exactly where I once was – overwhelmed, exhausted, just trying to keep their heads above water. I understand them because I’ve lived it.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.
That life-altering moment that once broke me… built me. And today, I stand not just as a business owner, but as a woman who fought her way through the hardest season of her life and came out stronger, grateful, and deeply committed to making a difference.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, not even close. I’ve fought for every inch of where I am today.
There’s no magic wand in entrepreneurship. No one hands you a step-by-step guide or guarantees things will work out. I had to learn business the hard way. Through trial and error, making mistakes, and figuring things out on my own in real time.
Along the way, I’ve trusted people who ended up hurting me. I’ve lost friendships. I’ve had to walk away from situations and relationships that no longer aligned with where I was going, even when it was difficult. That part doesn’t get talked about enough – the personal cost of growth.
I’ve also had to get very comfortable being uncomfortable. Growth doesn’t happen when things feel easy or safe. It happens in the moments where you’re unsure, stretched thin, and still choosing to push forward anyway.
Every setback, every hard lesson, every uncomfortable season – it all shaped me. It forced me to become stronger, more disciplined, and more intentional, not just as a business owner, but as a person and a mother.
So no, it hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Through Southern Maid, we specialize in deep cleans, maintenance cleaning, and high-detail services that transform not just a space, but how someone feels in it. We also have an incredible line of NATURAL, harsh chemical free products ranging from our Room sprays and carpet refreshers to our in house blend glass and electronic cleaner and Multipurpose. I’ve built this company on the belief that a clean home isn’t a luxury, it’s something that can completely shift your mental and emotional well-being.
What we’ve become known for is our attention to detail and the level of care we bring into every home. We don’t just “wipe things down”; we take pride in delivering a reset. Clients trust us because they know we treat their homes with the same level of care and respect as our own.
What I’m most proud of, though, is what this business represents. It started from nothing- out of survival, out of one of the hardest seasons of my life – and has grown into something that not only supports my son and me, but also allows me to serve others in a meaningful way. I’m proud that I’ve been able to create opportunities, not just for myself, but for others who want to grow and build something too. We have been able to build relationships with locals in the community that need help at no cost. We have created a partnership with local food pantries where we donate goods from our declutter jobs. We have created a line of candles for 5 Loaves Food Pantry and are able to give profit from the sales back to support others who need it most.
What sets me apart is the heart behind what I do. I understand my clients on a deeper level because I’ve been the overwhelmed mom, the exhausted worker, the person just trying to make it through the day. This isn’t just a business to me – it’s personal.
I don’t cut corners, I don’t treat this like “just a job,” and I don’t forget where I came from. Every home we walk into is an opportunity to make someone’s life a little easier, and that’s something I’ll never take for granted.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find a good therapist.. lol Kidding!
I didn’t have any real guidance starting out, so I learned by watching people I respected and applying it through action. You don’t always need direct access to a mentor to grow, you can learn a lot by simply paying attention and staying disciplined.
With networking, what worked best for me was leading with value. I focused on building real relationships, being reliable, and showing up consistently – not asking what I could gain.
I’ve also learned that growth requires outgrowing certain people and environments, and being okay with that.
My biggest advice: don’t wait for a mentor to start. Start Moving. When you’re committed and consistent, the right people will find you.
