Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Nichols.
Toni, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In May of 2022, I was diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine mammogram. It was a devastating diagnosis, and I still remember the phone call from my OBGYN. However, later that week, I met with my breast surgeon, and she truly is a gift from above. She gave me details about my type of cancer and my stage. She kept repeating that it was treatable and curable. She detailed a treatment plan and my superhero league of doctors to see me through the journey. It was like a weight lifted off of my shoulders. With a bright future ahead, I navigated surgeries, chemo treatments, and radiation treatments, with my support team keeping me empowered. I am happy to say I am cancer-free. This status still comes with 6 years of medications, testing, and monitoring, but I am determined to preserve my cancer-free status. I also chose to publicly document my journey on YouTube and Instagram under the name Cancer With Cancer (I am Cancerian by the zodiac) because I did not see too many stories coming from Black women. I want to help change that. Black women are more likely to die from cancer than other women. We need as much information out there as possible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge during the journey is the constant possibility of change. When I started the journey, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. When I underwent surgery just three months later, multiple tumors were found, making me Stage 2. At first, radiation and medication were my plan. Then, chemo was added in. Then more surgeries. You just have to be ready to turn and pivot, like a captain navigating a ship on rough waters. Keep your cool, communicate with your “crew,” and keep your eyes on your destination.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a Public Relations Manager for one of the largest credit unions in North Texas. I love my work–I get to tell the good news about the great things we do in the community. From scholarships to volunteering to financial well-being, we have a lot of positive impacts on our communities.
I’ve been honored to receive industry recognition through local and national awards. I’ve spearheaded award-winning campaigns, made incredible activation opportunities come to life, and helped navigate the pandemic with award-winning crisis communication projects.
I also have been blessed with so much support from the company. Everyone has been genuinely invested in supporting me and making decisions with my well-being in mind. I couldn’t ask for a better professional environment.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
For anyone who has just been diagnosed, please know it’s not the end. You are stronger than you know. Gather a strong support system. Get yourself organized because a lot of information will come your way. ASK FOR HELP AND RECEIVE THAT HELP. Taking care of yourself both physically and mentally is key to healing and beating this thing. I believe in you!
