Daily Inspiration: Meet Trevon Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon Stewart.

Hi Trevon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Trevon Stewart, first and foremost, I would like to greatly thank Voyage Dallas for this wonderful opportunity to share my story with the public. I find it very fascinating how creating your own path and not settling for one passion can lead you to success.

Every individual has their story and as a young man from Cleveland, Ohio. I was molded into a mentally tough individual. The situations I grew up into getting good grades wasn’t cool nor was going off to college and actually learning from it. Making money at young age, driving without a license, and going to play college basketball with no intention of focusing on schoolwork, all those things were cool and rebellious. My dream was to become a professional basketball player. Basketball saved me from a lot of those negative things, it motivated me. I told myself I wanna do good. I want to control my destiny.

However, everyone looked at me as just an athlete. Becoming a collegiate athlete took a lot of hard work, determination, and consistency. Unfortunately, I still struggled as a college basketball player. With that being said, without basketball, I would not be where I am today. Yet, the turning point in my life was realizing my God-given talent, drumming. I saw the bigger picture as musician, and I felt as though I’ve reached my full potential as a college basketball player. So, I decided to fully focus on my study of business analytics and becoming a professional drummer. I had to put 100% effort in, I made a great sacrifice in my life that helped me realize I can influence people on so many levels. I believe you have to do something every day that scares you. Challenge yourself to break out of your comfort zone and get yourself to a level you could never imagine yourself on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process of becoming a professional musician after years of focusing on college basketball has not been smooth. In fact, it is still a struggle. As a musician creativity is something that comes and goes. A lot of times, musically I would find myself thinking, “How would so and so approach this song?” Or “how exactly would someone play this song” Until finally, I stopped and asked myself, “How would I approach this song?” It’s times like these we must be reminded to just be ourselves. Play like you! I am inspired by so many amazing musicians, but at the end of the day. I want to sound like myself; I want to be myself. This does not only apply to musicians but everyone in walks of life. I’ve fallen in love with both the process and journey. I knew this was what I was destined to do once I got the same feeling I did with playing college basketball. Having to practice daily, study other drummers or musicians, and playing in front of crowds.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a result, I have been creating social media content to showcase my talent and skills, and I’ve been working on receiving endorsements from drum and cymbal companies. In addition, I’ve been given the opportunity to drum for Encounter Church in Fate, Texas. Playing for my lord and savior Jesus Christ has made me content with my life, I have never felt so fulfilled. I am grateful for the opportunity I have as a musician. I understand that music exerts a powerful influence on human beings so that is what I will continue to do, influence others.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Humility. Where I come from, It’s very humbling to proceed from a college basketball player to a drummer/musician, but I embraced. Doing so has allowed me to not only open up to new things but new opportunities such as this. I’ve gained so much dignity and integrity. My story has always started from primitive humble beginnings. That gave me no indication any of it was going to succeed. But I always believed it would fall into place no matter the circumstances. Everyone’s story has an arc. I can connect my story with someone who’s losing hope. We’re all intertwined that way. And it always turns out, my story is their story.
