Daily Inspiration: Meet Vanessa Herrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Herrera.

Hi Vanessa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Vanessa, I am originally from Plainview, a small city in west Texas. I moved to Garland, Tx the summer before my freshman year of high school at fourteen years old. I immediately fell in love with the city and the many opportunities it had to offer. Throughout my years of high school, I struggled to find a career path for myself and missed the comfort back home from family and friends. A few months into my senior year I moved back to Plainview where I did graduate in the class of 2016. Although I loved the comfort of my small hometown, I was pushed to step out of my comfort zone and back into the city. The decision to move back to the DFW area has been the best choice for my future. Deep down I always knew I loved the beauty industry and Dallas was the city for all the amazing opportunities. In January of 2017, I enrolled in cosmetology at Aveda Institute of Dallas. In March of 2018, I became a licensed cosmetologist. This was the start of my journey as an artist.

Soon after acquiring my license, I became a cashier at MAC & Bumble and Bumble. At the end of 2018, I became a MAC Pro makeup artist. I was overjoyed with the amazing opportunity. In March 2020 sadly we closed due to the pandemic. My journey with MAC ended in August of 2020. I knew even though that door was closing, amazing opportunities were ahead for me. A week following, I had a work interview at the Mermaid Sealon.

In August of 2020, I began as the salon assistant at the Mermaid Sealon. Although after cosmetology I mainly focused on makeup, I was eager to learn extension. After working next to many amazing stylist, I was able to learn a new skill.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being the artist I am today definitely has not been an easy journey. In the beginning, I struggled a lot with confidence. I was that shy girl that didn’t really talk much. I quickly came to the realization I couldn’t be a hairstylist/mua and not talk to others. Yet I was determined to push myself out of my comfort zone which has helped me grow so much not only as an artist but an individual.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently offer hair extension, blowout/ dry style, haircut, boho braid, and makeup services at the Mermaid Sealon in Dallas, TX. I take pride in how far this small city girl has come after stepping out of her comfort zone. I am so proud of the amazing family and friends I’ve had that have blessed me with outstanding support. I strive to continue to learn and stay updated on trends for my clients. In my chair, you’ll not only get beautiful hair and makeup but always a friend in me. I truly care for each and every one of my clients.

What are your plans for the future?
I am blessed with the opportunities I have attained as an artist. I seek to develop and improve myself as a hairstylist/mua. I’d love to share my talents with others and make them feel as beautiful as they are in a fun/ trendy environment in my very own salon.
