Today we’d like to introduce you to Walt Farrington
Hi Walt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I had a pretty normal childhood, I went to school everyday and had lots of friends. I played video games and loved basketball. Ignorance was bliss until middle school. I was bullied a lot to the point where I turned to drugs at an early age. And to top off my worries, home life was getting rough with my mom drinking and my dad being physically there but was never mentally around. My mental health was declining slowly. Since I got bullied so much, for high school I went to a different school. Here I met a lot of my close friends, also found a lot of people to avoid. Late my freshman year, my parents divorced. It was a very ugly divorce. This made me lean on drugs even more. I used drugs so much I ended up overdosing and ending up In a wilderness program. I was in and out of rehabs for around 7-8 months. But I know it saved my life. When I came back, my mom got my a mini studio to start recording in. I started trial and error and learned everything by myself. I got better each song and eventually dropped an album this December. Overall Ive gone through a lot and I think that’s why I always have inspiration for music. Throughout my life I hold one specific quote close that I think is why I persevere. “A man with a why can bear almost any how”. -Viktor Frankl
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve struggled a lot with drugs and addiction. I used to cope with my negative way of thinking. I also used to cope with my mom’s alcoholism. I’ve always been my worst enemy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mainly produce and make beats. But I also rap and make my own songs. My style and way I go about things is to just be myself. I try to be genuine so people can see the real me. My beats are different in their own way but I have a wide variety of styles I can adapt to and make. I take a lot of my inspiration to make beats off of video game music. I loved Nintendo games as a kid (could’ve guessed my names kirbie) and I take a lot of samples from those games. My rap style is pretty flexible. I never write lyrics down I freestyle every song I make. I try to be creative and come up with new bars every song. My goal with my music is to make the listener feel a certain type of way unique to the song. Most rap songs make you feel a limited about of emotions, I try to find new emotions to dig up in my music and make the listener feel something they have never felt before in a rap song.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a shy kid. Most of my friends were only on my xbox so I would stay on the game a lot to try and get away from life itself. But I did love rap music. Ever since I was a kid, rap has made me feel invincible. Especially the Album Culture 1 by Migos. I was bumping Migos since I was 13. Rap was the only thing that really got me out of my shell.
