Dr. Porchia James of Frisco, TX on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Porchia James and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Porchia, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, my biggest joy outside of work has been spending time with my daughters, Pharrah and Gauddous. Watching them grow, explore their interests, and develop their own little personalities keeps me grounded and reminds me of what’s truly important. Whether it’s cheer competitions, dance parties in the living room, or bedtime conversations, those moments bring me so much happiness and balance.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Porchia James, an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, entrepreneur, wife, and mom of two girls. I specialize in dental implants, facial esthetics, and IV sedation, and I’m passionate about making transformative care both accessible and empowering for patients. Beyond my practice, I’ve built my personal brand, Dr. Porchia, at the intersection of surgery, beauty, and lifestyle, creating spaces that celebrate women in medicine, mentorship, and luxury without guilt. I’m currently working on expanding into education, healthcare tech, and events like The Phresh Experience, a conference for women healthcare providers. My journey is about showing that you can excel in surgery, lead as a businesswoman, and still live boldly, stylishly, and authentically.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One of the most defining moments for me was serving in the U.S. Air Force as a dentist early in my career. Working with service members from all walks of life gave me perspective on discipline, resilience, and the importance of service beyond yourself. It shaped how I approach both patient care and leadership. I see dentistry and surgery not just as clinical work, but as a way to restore confidence, dignity, and hope. That experience taught me to value people’s stories as much as their smiles, and it still guides how I see the world today.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that held me back the most was the idea of failing publicly. As a surgeon, entrepreneur, and mom, I often felt pressure to have it all together and make the right moves the first time. But over time, I realized that failure is part of growth, and that vulnerability and transparency can inspire others just as much as success does. Letting go of that fear has allowed me to take bolder steps in business, embrace new opportunities, and build a life that’s both fulfilling and authentic.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I think a lot of smart people are getting it wrong by glorifying busyness instead of balance. Success isn’t about who works the longest hours or sacrifices the most. It’s about building something sustainable while protecting your health, family, and joy. I’ve learned that true innovation and leadership come when you make space to rest, recharge, and think creatively, not just when you’re constantly grinding.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I used my gifts to transform lives, whether it was restoring someone’s smile, mentoring the next generation of doctors, or simply showing up fully as a wife, mom, and friend. I want to be remembered as a woman who combined excellence with compassion, who made people feel seen and empowered, and who proved that you can chase big dreams without losing your humanity.
