Durant , it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
I am a Singer, Songwriter, and Actor from Fort Worth, Texas. I started singing at the age of four. In 2005, I released my first independent EP called “The One 4 Me”. Local self-promotion for my first EP led me to performing professionally in DFW area theatre. To this date, I have performed in over thirty local professional plays/musicals throughout the DFW area. My most recent EP “CRASH” was released two years ago, and since then I’ve released several singles such as “Rose-Colored Glasses”, a Christmas song called “This Season (Jingle Bells)”, and my most recent single “Summer Fling (‘21 Re-Vamp)”. During the day, I am an 8am to 5pm corporate employee, which provides me the income to pay for all of my independent artistic endeavors.
How did the recent pandemic effect you as an artist?
On the positive side, it allowed me to be a bit more creative especially with my songwriting. I think I’ve written some of my best songs during the recent pandemic. “Rose-Colored Glasses” is arguably the best song I have, lyrically and vocally, in my growing music catalog. On the negative side, it has caused me to have a bit of stage fright. I’ve been a performer pretty much all of my life, and not being on stage for over a year has made me scared to get back at it. I’m afraid that I may not be as good as I’d like to be live on stage this time around.
Who and what continues to inspire you?
During the recent pandemic, I watched a lot of performance videos and behind the scenes clips from artists that inspire me like Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Prince, P!nk, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, and etc. That really helped keep me inspired and motivated. I’m also inspired by local artists who write their own lyrics.
Have your goals as an artist changed since the last time we interviewed you?
I am so sorry, but I do not remember what my goals were at that time. However, right now I aspire to just be more inspirational as a person and an artist. I want to reach more people with my music, and hopefully change a life or two.
Are there any local artists you’d like to collaborate on a music project with in the future?
I’m hoping to do a collaboration with Rickie Jones, who is an amazing R&B singer/songwriter in the area. I’d also love to work with Tyra + Tiara. They are a twin duo in the area, and I am such a huge fan of their music. Their vocals are so melodious. I’ve actually reached out to work with them awhile ago, but they were busy at the time. So, hopefully it’ll happen one day in the near future.
What projects can we look forward to from you?
Hopefully, there are more acting gigs in the future for me. I’d like to find a great local agent. As far as music, I wrote and co-produced a song for my friend Natasha Wells who was featured on my single “No Pressure”. It will be her debut single “Confounded Love (Release Me)” and it will be out on all digital platforms in July. I will be releasing another single shortly afterwards, but right now, I want focus on promoting my current single “Summer Fling (‘21 Re-Vamp)”.
