Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Yang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first had this idea of trying to start my own small business at the end of 2021. It was a time where I was really busy working my full-time HR job and I was right in the middle of grad school, too. I think I was so focused on trying to find ways to propel my career forward that I slightly lost sight of “fun”. It got me started thinking of creative ways that I could potentially make money while also having fun and getting some “color” back in my life! Like anyone, I’ve always loved clothes, fashion, and beauty. During this particular time, I was really into building up my “boss babe” life and wanted to take a stab at trying a small business boutique, so I did. February 2022 I finally got up and running. First things first I had to think of a unique name for my online boutique! The inspiration behind the name selection came from flashes of me running around doing errands on the weekend and throwing on whatever I could find quickly and trying my best to style it so that I would still feel cute! I kept that feeling in mind when I started this business and wanted to offer clothes with an elevated casual style for other boss babes just like me! I wanted to have a online shop that had go-to pieces that could make anyone feel effortlessly cute! When it was time to come up with the name, I ended up using my dog’s nickname, Wessie (actual name is Wes) because he was the first thing that came to mind when I was brainstorming words that exuded the image of being effortlessly cute. That’s really it, it’s not any deeper than that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. But I never expected it to be a smooth road. Some of the struggles would be marketing yourself from scratch, reaching the intended audience, and having the right resources to put the business out to the masses.
I am currently online-only, so I have participated in small business markets and other vendor events a handful of times. Sometimes it’s a major hit and sometimes it’s a complete miss. Doesn’t stop the fact that I’d love to get my clothes out to people who would love them – just challenges me to find better, more creative ways to reach people.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
WESSIE is an online-only small business boutique! We offer women’s apparel/accessories. What sets this brand apart from others is that we offer elevated casual fashion! Nothing ties your outfit together more than the perfect skort, a simple shacket, or unique pair of sunnies!
Go check out shopwessie.com and there’s an option for FREE local pickup if you’re in the North Dallas area! I love meeting my customers and hearing about the next event they plan to wear their WESSIE outfit to!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I honestly was just winging it without a true game plan. If I could go back in time I would’ve been more thoughtful about what I wanted out of this small business boutique and minimize the guesswork.
